What began as a weekend retreat for the city friends of the colonial founders of La Garza has evolved into a small, intimate hotel for discerning travelers.

Like the farm's founders, you can still awaken to the sounds of the birds and monkeys dwelling on the river bank in front of your room. You can still watch the sunrise hitting the awe inspiring cone of the Arenal Volcano and you can still cross a swinging bridge to reach the ranch house to eat breakfast in a casona (main farm house) built 100 years ago.

It's nearly impossible to enter the forest without seeing the wildlife, literally leaping from tree to tree overhead. Standing beneath the magnificent strangler fig (it was an adult tree when Columbus arrived in Costa Rica), you start to realize the meaning of the word "timeless".

The modern, clean, thoughtfully designed guest bungalows have replaced the older main house rooms. The river out front invites you outside, to walk alongside its banks and contemplate on the sheer natural beauty surrounding you.

The beds are comfortable and the hammocks on the individual verandas lets you relax and watch the river for wildlife. Fall asleep at night with the sounds of frogs on the Platanar River running behind the bungalows.

The spacious guest bungalows reflect the ambiance of a former era, when all the "best" homes had smooth, shining hardwood floors, wood-lined interiors and high ceilings, huge showers and simple but comfortable furnishings.

RATES 2013 - 2014

• Rates in US dollars and do no include local tax (13%).
• Rates include Costa Rican typical breakfast.
• One or two children under 10 years old sharing room with adults are free of charge. There is an additional cost for breakfast of $5.00 plus taxes.
• Each additional person or child older than 10 years will be charged an additional $15.00 plus tax per night with breakfast included.

Transfers from San Jose area hotels or San Jose's Juan Santamaría International Airport to hotels in the Arenal area are $160.00 each way, for a minivan with a capacity of up to 9 passengers. Approximate time from San José to the Arenal area is approx 2 hours and 45 minutes.
